I was torn whether to write this, but reading Picki‘s and Nico‘s thoughts I thought why not. Dominik was wondering why I think I can change voter’s behaviour, putting the Obama logo in my avatar.
I don’t know whether I make people change, but I am pretty sure that that was not the reason why I put the logo there. 3 other reasons:
1. I root for Obama, I think he’ll make a great POTUS. And I think I will be personally affected by his person, term and policy. I wanted to show my “fandom”, just like I’ll continue to wear hockey jersey’s at hockey games, although I know that won’t make my team play better.
2. Like Nico I am deeply connected to an American family and I root for Obama on their behalf. Having to live in a country where the leader does not care about what is best for his people is nothing to aspire to. And I agree with Nico, the picture for the 2009 election is bleak, in particular because no candidate is going to be able to make us Germans care enough. (we only care for ourselves, but that is a different story.
3. It will be a better world to live in with him as leader of the USA. Call me naive. Sure, he might have his own alliances, but I do not think his policies will be as tainted by oil, daddy’s friendships and personal favors.
I could have not shown where my heart is in this case, but that is what we Germans do. We as a people don’t care for the greater good (not meant as an insult to you, dear reader). But I do. And come 2009, it might be time for every twitter loud-mouth to, as the American’s say, put our money where our mouth is and get off of our butts.
