Ever wondered, who has the most views on qik? Read on!
This won’t be a standard show case, since I don’t have that many numbers. But I would like to point out a website that has done almost everything right to become one of the most popular sites in their niche,
hockeybuzz.com.
During the National Hockey League’s (NHL) lockout season 2004-05, an individual that called himself “Eklund” (after a Flyers player), started a mailing list and website. The deal was join now for 20$ and be a life-time “season-ticket” holder for premium content. I did join and have been following his efforts ever since. He did launch that website, hockeybuzz.com.
In 2006 he launched hockeybuzz blogs which now features authors such as NHL analysts, officials from NHL teams, players and celebrities.
Eventually, got himself a twitter account which about 1.000 people are following. And, he has a qik-page too.
Here are some numbers:
Between June 15th, and July 15th. Per Google Analytics, users have
visited our site 5 million times and viewed 18 million pages. All of
this has made us climb the ranks in terms of our ranking among all
websites.
Alexa ranks websites and among the billions of sites out there (on
every topic imaginable) Hockeybuzz.com is now the 344th most popular
website in all of Canada and the 4,214th in America.

And who has the most-watched qik videos? That’s right, the top 4 do not belong to neither TechCrunch, Scoble nor Jason Calacanis (although they all are in the top 20). While I am not sure the family of hockey player Dallas Drake is happy with being watched, I think it is a great sign for Social Media and Social Media tool providers. Somebody is showing the traditional content publishers how it is done in todays times.
(Sidenote: The NHL is not sleeping, the have distribution deals with the iTunes Store, Yahoo, Joost and Hulu)
I can’t wait to see what he comes up next.
A little caveat does come with the success and that is customer service. I have repeatedly contacted both hockeybuzz.com through the contact sheet and Eklund directly via twitter – solving problems with my hockeybuzz-account is nearly impossible.
