One of the first things I did when getting online was to visit the site for my favorite band at that time, Dream Theater. Can you remember the first time you saw the power of the web? Well, all of a sudden there where the lyrics to songs, pictures, FAQ, bio and – the Ytsejam mailing list. I was part of that for a long time, until a couple of months ago. Then, as drummer Mike Portnoy (one of the band’s leaders) figured out the web more and more for himself, attention shifted to the “forum” on his own site. Aside from the contract DT had with its label, Portnoy released an Official Bootleg series with audio and video material. Finally out of the major label deal, Dream Theater moved to much smaller Roadrunner Records and entered the myspace revolution with audio, video and blog. Some time this week I received an email about the Dream Theater YouTube-Channel – here is some background:
If you haven’t been there yet, it’s about time that you check out DREAM THEATER‘s official YOUTUBE page.
The very depths of YOUTUBE have been scoured to bring you the finest DREAM THEATER footage from all around the site into this one source. It’s your one stop shop for DREAM THEATER video clips and it’s growing every day.
While the amount of footage already to be found on the page is great, YOU can also help to make this page the largest collection of DREAM THEATER video clips to be seen anywhere on the net.
All you have to do is go through the collection of clips on the YOUTUBE page. If your footage hasn’t already been uploaded or added as a favorite, upload it onto YOUTUBE and send a message to DREAM THEATER‘s profile with a link to the video. If it passes the following set of rules, then it will be added as a favorite. If it fails to abide by the following rules, the video will be reported to YOUTUBE and Roadrunner Records for deletion pursual:
PLEASE UPLOAD:
BOOTLEG FOOTAGE
TELEVISION APPEARANCES
INTERVIEWS
HOMEMADE CLIPS
ETC.DO NOT UPLOAD:
COMMERCIAL FOOTAGE
(Anything that you can buy in a store, online or off. This includes all material to be found on studio CDs, concert DVDs, instructional videos, official bootlegs and/or any other release of a commercial nature).
I think it is an awesome move. It shows how empowered bands are in todays age and also how to take matters in ones own hand: “Use the community, but please, here are two rules.” I can’t wait to the fall when they tour with Symphony X.
