Is it just me or are other NHL-fans equally surprised by the first deals of this year’s free-agency frenzy. A seven-year deal for Elias? No learnings from the Yashin contract? Elias isn’t 26 no more. Boston with 5 million $s for Savard? Have they learned nothing from the Martin Lapointe disaster? Kubina worth 5 m/year? And while Shanahan is my favorite player I can only laugh at the idea that anybody would pay him more than 3m$? Sure he had a good season, just like the last time his contract was up… The following year his production went down substantially. And what are Tampa and Colorado trying to do?

I don’t see how teams have a choice, unless you decide that you’ll never get involved in free agency at all. The cap keeps payrolls low by forcing the salaries of the lesser players down, but if you want a good player, you have to overpay or he’ll go elsewhere. You can build a team more slowly from within, but a lot of markets don’t have patience for long-term rebuilding.

I’ll overpay good players. But not Kubina, Arnott, Savard and everybody who had one good season at the right time…
