Why bother with the question whether blu-ray or HD DVD will be the format of the future? While Steve Rubel paints an ad-free content model with premium – paid for – content I found myself thinking about DVDs: movies on DVD, VHS or whatever format you care to use.
How many of my DVDs have I watched more than twice? How many have I watched twice?
Maybe I should disagree with elite members of the Gillmor Gang and switch to the iTMS-model of rented music.
I like to rent movies eg from Amazon because I hate to watch a movie once and than have the jewel case take up space on my shelf. I love to watch music/concert films, but I hate to buy them, because it’s only fun to watch them once. Therefore I buy them seldomly to spare me the hassle of the following ebay sale.
If I were a valid sample this would mean that movie studios should cancel their orders of discs and instead concentrate on download models ASAP. Sure, the discs won’t go away, they are a cheap storage medium, but the times where you buy content on a non-reusable medium are over.
I am sure many people have already figured this out, but for me it just added up.

For the most part, I stopped buying DVDs a few months ago and now rely on Netflix .. one exceptiion will be the new special edition of Napoleon Dynamite .. freakin sweet

Living in Germany I have heard of Netflix, but the service is not available here. How big is the selection?
Another point I didn’t mention but thought was obvious: Apart from saving shelf-space, you save money of course. At a renting rate of 3EUR/disc I can rent a movie 3-5 times and still spend less than when I purchase it.

I don’t know if I am the right sample. But I have never bought a DVD so far. I am renting DVDs at Amango’s. That real fun. And for the near future I would like to download the films instead of getting them as DVD.
At the end of the day: We are already two.

Downloads, my point. Since I have Premiere and get many movies in German and English and w/o ads it makes no sense to buy DVDs. The only question is, where to I get concert movies…
